i bought the swing for pumping milk after my third baby. my previous pump, an avent, had broken and from the reviews i was led to believe the medela swing would be better. its ok - a bit better than the avent but not enough to justify the extra cost. The suction is less than i would have wanted and also loses strength if you use just battery power. the pumping tubes do not secure well into the pump or bottle so have a tendency to slip out - a very irritating design fault. Condensation forms in the tubes quickly and can go mouldy. It does the job but with a bit of tinkering by the medela design team, it could work even better.

I initially was only planning to breast pump 2 days a week - evenings my husband would be spending with our daughter while I was away. I bought the Medela Single Deluxe for like $70 and after a week, realized how much I had wasted my money. Over time, I ended up pumping 4 days a week due to breastfeeding complications, so I decided to purchase the Swing. The Swing has decent suction and definitely gets the job done, but for me, it took about 15-25 minutes to finish pumping both breasts. Milk does back up into the tubing sometimes (which usually means the suction is set too high) and you can clear the milk by pumping 2oz of warm soapy water followed by 2oz of warm clear water.... HOWEVER, all of that wasn't worth it to me. My Swing stopped working several times because of milk backing up into the motor and I was out a pump for a day... NOT GOOD if you're exclusively pumping. I ended up purchasing the Medela Freestyle (yay for breast pump #3) and finally found the pump for me. I am an exclusive breast pumper and the freestyle (a double pump) gets the job done in 5-10 minutes - referring to 10oz of milk total. I wish I would have just listened to other reviews and saved myself a lot of time and money, and bought the freestyle first.
If you only plan on pumping occasionally - the swing will work for you... but if you have a doubt about going full-time or are have milk supply issues or breastfeeding issues - i would highly recommend the Freestyle.

Needless to say, an automated pump saves you time when collecting breast milk. This one is great for the price and having used a few different breast pumps (automated and manual), I find the Medela brand to be worth the money spent on it. A note to keep in mind is that breast pumps are the most effective when your milk supply is already established/stable.
